Ibn Yunus' full name is Abul Hasan Ali bin Abdur Rahman Al-Misri. His father was a famous muhaddith and historian. His grandfather Ahmad Ibn Yunus was a great scholar. Ibn Yunus was the greatest scientist in Egypt at that time. The Fatimid emperor of Egypt built an observatory for him. This observatory was located on a hill called Mukattam in the Egyptian city of Fustat. Ibn Yunus observed various objects in the sky in this observatory. He observed solar and lunar eclipses from 977 AD to 986 AD. Then he described them very well in his book. One of the great achievements of Ibn Yunus is that he invented the pendulum 600 years before Galileo. He used the pendulum specifically to observe astronomy. Ibn Yunus wrote many books. Among them is the name of a famous book - الزيج الكبير الحاكمي (Az-Zizul Kabiril Hakimi). He made this book for Hakim B-Amrillah, the Fatimid Caliph of Egypt. He wrote all the details about solar eclipses and lunar eclipses in this book. He then compared the book to their writing. He proved that the speed of the moon is constantly increasing. And this was his important discovery. A place on the moon was named after Ibn Yunus for his contribution to astronomy. Ibn Yunus died in 1009 AD (399 AH).
